Got a layover at BWI? Check out these ways to pass the time.
When traveling for business or pleasure, getting to your destination is typically half the fun.
Whether your mode of transportation is air, sea or road, it is possible to make a long journey a little more desirable by finding entertaining things to do along the way.
And when traveling by air, making the most of your airport layovers can be something to look forward to.
Historically, the airport is not the most pleasant place. Crowds, limited resources and uncomfortable seating are just a few of the challenges airports present.
However, at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, boredom does not have to be a part of your layover experience.
Staying In The Airport
Baltimore International, like every other airport, has standard amenities to suit your basic needs.
Dining includes a range of options from fast foot, such as Arby’s or Subway, to finer dining, like Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen and Vino Vollo Wine Bar. Check out this list of dining options at BWI:

Art and Entertainment
Once you have finished your shopping, it’s time to check out the Baltimore International Observation Gallery, home to NASA spacecraft, a children’s play area, the Maryland Youth Art Gallery, charging stations for your electronics and the Sky Azure cocktail lounge, which offers small plates along with a broad selection of local craft beers, international wines, and hand-crafted cocktails.
Near the Observation Gallery is the Thurgood Marshall Tribute, an interesting exhibit of the life of one of the country’s leading civil rights activists and namesake of the airport.
After an exciting trip around the airport, it’s time to relax.
The Meditation Room, located between Concourses D and E, was created for just that purpose. The room’s diffused lighting and lack of overhead announcements provide a serene atmosphere for the traveler looking to slow down and relax.
Outside the Airport
If your layover is 4 hours or longer, there are plenty of things surrounding Baltimore Washington International Airport that can make your layover a pleasurable one.
Baltimore International may be the first commercial airport in the United States to have a dedicated hiker/biker trail.
The 12.5 mile trail encircles the property surrounding the airport. In addition to the great scenery, attractions along the way include the historic Benson-Hammond House and the Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area, which has restrooms, a playground, benches and signs offering aircraft identification tips.
While some points on the trail admittedly offer views of arriving and departing flights, other sections are more rustic, truly taking you away from it all. You can rent a bike from Zagster Bike Share at the Light Rail station, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the scenery and keep your New Year’s resolution of weight loss.
Explore the City
If your layover allows it, exploring Baltimore and its surrounding cities is a great way to spend your time. The airport is located roughly 10 miles from Baltimore’s city center, and about 30 miles from Washington, D.C. making both cities accessible for those stuck on a long layover, with time to leave the transit area and return before their next flight.
Visit the Baltimore Museum of Art, check out the Inner Harbor, and sit down to a meal in Baltimore’s LoDo district.
Use Reliable Transportation
Taking an airport car service from Baltimore International can make your journey from Baltimore International to your destination simple and stress free.
Sit back and relax while your chauffeur takes you to your location and tells you about the must see sights in the city. Having a local driver is a great way to learn about great sights and sounds in Baltimore.
